An interesting walk starting at the Saxon church of St Helen follows Bazil Lane to the foreshore of the R Lune estuary to the Globe Hotel where it meets the causeway(subject to tides)taking you to Sunderland point. Here you can do a small circuit of the point itself and see Samboo's grave, which even yesterday(09/02/2010)after a frosty and snowy winter carried the flowers and trinkets laid there by schoolchildren.
It is worth a visit and there are several detailed walking guides, but my advice would be to see it in late spring or summer.

Hi Anemophilous, and welcome to h2g2
Thanks for the walk suggestion. When I visited (an August) I parked at the Globe rather than risk the causeway. I tried to follow the footpaths on an OS map but soon lost the marked route. Fortunately, you can't really get lost there, can you?
