The Free Masons and other secret societies of this nature tend to have a class bias to their membership. Members are mainly drawn from the middle and upper classes and own their own businesses. Being accepted into the Free Masons means so much more than simply the prestige or the 'need to belong to an exclusive group'. When you strip away all the secrecy and the ritual, you're left with a wealth of business opportunities and a greater chance of economic advancement. As far as i can see, this is the only real reason societies like the Stone Masons still exist. All the rest of it is just window dressing.

I thought this ... but my father was invited to join a lodge in London. He was 'just' a builder and decorator, with working-class background. So I don't know?!?

Yep so Postmen come where in your idea? The membership of my Kent Lodge is around 60 p[er cent postal workers and yes my mail still turns up late
