Surely there really only two basic mechanical machines...the lever and the inclinded plane.
The wheel is a rotary lever
The screw thread is an inclinded plane wrapped around a central core.
The pulley is two wheels attached together sharing the load
The wedge is 2 inclinded planes back to back.
There are also basic energy machines such as a thin wire which converts electrical energy into heat and light. The piezo crystal which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy or via versa. There are actually many more, pressure vessel for example and expansion tubes which convert pressure into heat and so on...
