Is this the same Gauss who had a lot to do with working out the maths and physics of magnetism, and has both an SI unit and an engineering process (degaussing a ship makes it less attractive to magnetic mines) after him?

Yep, that's the chap. Actually he would deserve an Entry all by himself, pretty much in the spirit of Euler in A28808517.
I have never heard of degaussing a ship, I love that word How do you do that, and why does it work?
