We call a stick to hold up a car's hatchback an Idiot, or Stupid stick.

I always thought an idiot stick was an imaginary device which was alleged to have hit someone who just said or did something idiotic. Simlalrly, an ugly person was someone who had been hit or beaten with an ugly stick. And so on.

That is the stick's secondary function. My mom would hit us with it and tell us we were ugly... Oh the painful childhood memories!
