i live in australia and Neighbours is definately regarded as being among the more light-hearted aussie soaps - particularly Home and Away which is run in the same timeslot on the seven network.
interestingly, in the past 18 months or so i've noticed that the characters in Neighbours have developed a bit of a social conscience and have begun to discuss amnesty and various australian charities, and in one instance sport a "free tibet" shirt.
i haven't been watching it long enough to know whether or not this is unprecedented, but would be interested in finding out.
