The council tips around Bradford have the scary warning "Removal of Items from this tip is Theft"

I think this is a shortsighted and sad reflection on a council which will have to spend millions of pounds of OUR [council-tax] money to pay its landfill taxes. It should be encouraging people to reduce, re-use, recycle rather than threatening its customers.

I use Freecycle where I can, it's a great scheme. There's probably a group near you, and it only costs an email to join!

Councils often pay people to retrieve good stuff from the tips which is repaired and sold to make money for the council. Of course, their ideas of what are saleable items probably don't cover all the items people would want to reuse.

It's vandalism to dumpster dive in NY, officially, probably because of the resulting mess. Doesn't stop local freegans at all...

When I was kid, we'd go down the street on trash day and pick up "salvagable" furniture. That's how my parents furnished our apartment. We also got clothes and toys that way sometimes.
It's something I don't ever want to do again in my life time.
I'll take gifts, buy at second hand shops or really cheap retail outlets, but I'll never go curb shopping again.
It's a humiliating experiance to know that your stuffed animals or toys came out of the trash of somebody else.
The worst thing, I think, is when my mom would buy wsed underwear from St. Vincent's. Now, that's just unsanitary.smiley - erm
