Arthur C Clarke's short story "Inside the Comet" is well worth a look - in it a bunch of spacemen are trapped inside a comet by a faulty computer and have to use abacuses (abaci?) to do the calculations that will get them out of it.
Not big on technical detail, though - thanks for telling me all this stuff, it really adds depth.
