I am far removed from campus politics, although I have read about similar battles on the literature front. I am also poorly grounded in history, but I did watch a video course from The Teaching Co. on Ancient Rome:

The lecturer is Garrett G. Fagan from Penn State, and he made the comment that there is so little actual documentation of the early days of Rome, it is like trying to see the Louvre Museum by looking through the keyholes.
I recall he did mention some scholarly differences of opinion on certain points. Still, it was a pretty good story ... if the Romans had only figured out a reasonable succession of power, we all might be speaking ... uh, Latin, I guess.
