I thought a perfect martini was made with gin (or vodka) in the usual way, you then show it the Martini bottle, or alternatively wave the stopper of the Martini bottle over the mix, before straining.

You're like me, extra extra dry martini (chilled gin, in other words).

Everybody is missing the point. The perfect martini is NOT made with Martini. The purist (like Winston Churchill) would insist on using Noilly Prat. Italian vermouth is just too crude.
