I feel obligated to point out that the ant method worked just as well as today's methods, and actually worked better that the first attempts.

They didn't require removal, either, and often caused less tissue damage.

Interestingly, there has been a recent innovation for vascular closure: clips. These look and work like and mandibles, and because they don't penetrate the tissue they increase patency and with no risk of sinus.
