77-carat gold?

'the rings from SB XXX are made from 77-carat gold,' - And they're only valued at $5,000? If I had 77-carat gold I think I'd be looking for more than that.

There's no such thing as 77-carat gold - not even in the USA. Check out the World Gold council website: http://www.gold.org/jewellery/technology/caratage/
As you will see, caratage goes up to 24 which is regarded as pure gold and is seldom used for jewellery. The winners of SB XXX could have had rings made from 77% pure gold, which would be 18.48 carat, but that's not the same thing.
Could somebody please check the facts and make a correction?

I found a couple of references to Super Bowl rings using "18 carat yellow gold." I would assume this is what the author was referring to.
