A Conversation for Practical Tips for Driving in France for British Drivers

A British Cabbie's View

As first time US visitors to London, my wife insisted on our arrival that we take a cab from Victoria Station (after a train ride from Gatwick) to our hotel (the rest of the time was pure travel pass - Tube, etc.) The driver was quite polite and informative, but when I nervously asked about driving on the "wrong" side of the street, he said he vacationed in France where he could adapt to the right side easily. Further, when they asked him about the "wrong" side, he explained (to them) that the British had been driving on the left for many centuries. Even with jet lag, I knew it was time to cut my losses and change the subject. smiley - online2long

Well, they have... I read an archeological report somewhere or other on the web where a study of the road leading up to a Roman Quarry showed that they were driving on the left hand side of the road 2000 years ago... (The wheel treads were deeper on one side of the road - indicating which side the laden trucks carrying stones away from the quarry were driving).
