A Conversation for 'Eyes Wide Shut' - the Film

Eyes Wide Shut

As a certified Kubrick fan, I must say that Eyes Wide Shut was the film I'd wanted to see more than any other this year - including "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace". When I saw it, though, it kept reminding me of "The Shining", especially in the way Tom Cruise said his lines in a style very much like Jack Nicholson did.
Was it just me who thought this, or does anyone else agree?

Interesting take. I did not feel that effect from Cruise. However, I did feel that film was shot in the way 2001 was shot. The film had a languid feel that you do not usually feel in contemporary films where the Directors feel that a couple of minutes without dialoge will lose the audience. I appreciated that Kubric tried not to make value judgements, he left that for us smiley - smiley

A lot of the films have that kind of feel to them, that Eccles & I have nicknamed "stillness" - the way everything is still, and only the camera and what should be focused on moves. It's hard top describe. Yet for some reason, "Dr Strangelove" seems to be completely different in that respect.

I found that in watching the film, it was as though as I was watching a film that had been made thirty years ago, but with the context and film quality of today. The devices he used were very dated (such as the three repeating notes on the piano that get faster and faster, much like the music in jaws, and the sudden zoom-out that happens at one climactical point in the film (I don't want to spoil anything)) but don't get me wrong, I LOVED the film.

Me too.
But then, the fact that it was made like that definately meant it stands out among other modern films.
