If the universe is an infinite area, the number of parsecs would be infinite also... So it is quite rediculous to say that is is only a few billion...

Yes, "if" the universe is an infinite region. But if the big bang theory holds out, the universe isn't infinite--it is only quite large, and you can give the diameter in parsecs. Also, be careful when talking about area when you mean volume, and don't confuse units of length for units of area.

Space MUST be infinite. If it was not then there would be an edge to the Universe, and who's to say we are not right on the edege. Even if the Universe just curves back on itself it would still be infinite in area, although finite in space. (see Planet Of The Apes) I once read in a newspaper that scientists had declared that 96.3 percent was matter and the rest was nothingness and anti-matter, with something of infinite area how can you measure percentages, or distance? I look at it this way, if you believe the universe is finite than you may as well believe the earth is flat because if the universe is finite, why can we not see the edges. measurements taken a while ago show that the universe is too young for a slow non-disturbed evolution to take place, so somehow somthing must have effected our growth into humans. Also if the univers is that young we should be able to reach out and see it's edeges... which makes you wonder, what does the edege of the Universe look like? I have had dreams of being on (sorry DNA) The heart of Gold, which took us to the edege of the universe, when we stepped off we were in GOD's (if you will) Den, which was very large in comparison... and brings to mind that our universe has all the qualities of an atom at a very large scale.... Hmmm makes you think no?

It seems to me that you think, that a finite space has to be shaped like a sphere, so that when you travel in a straight line, you will at some point end up at some sort of edge.
This is not the case, lets say that you travel from earth in a straight line, for a long enough period of time, instead of smashing in to the edge, you would eventualy end up where you started.
This is because the universe is not shaped like a sphere, it is shaped like something else, that only an extremly intellegent shade of blue would understand.
By the way I have been at the edge in person so I know it is not there

It is like trying to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, I understand that point of perspective, yes, but I cant see how we can just start giving units of measurement to things we cannot comprehend. I just wish scientists wouldnt speculate so publicly all the time, it sucks when they do and are wrong. I have bitter feelings from my first grade science lessons and history lessons, they taught us that Columbus discovered America (when a Viking named Eric the Red actually discovered it) and that the reason we have seasons is because the earth is closer to the sun in the summer and farther in the winter. They didnt teach us that the actual reason was the tilt of the Earth affecting how much sunlight our area gets each year.

If the Universe is finite, then what will we ever do with ourselves? Sooner or later in a finite universe all possibilities have to be exhauseted... and so we drift, ever after into the oblyvion that is nothingness...

That has got to be the best definition I have ever heard for it... I laugh every time I hear it. I think the world will never be ready for anything so it all might as well happen right now.

You have to get out more often.Life does not revolve,or evolve, around a keyboard. Try travel,perhaps even space travel.

I spend much time at work and this is what I do when I am not doing anything else. I spend to much time at home right now watching tv (as I have nothing else) or reading. My girlfriend will be down here on saturday so I will have something to do this weekend It feels good to finally be in an apartment rather than barraks! I plan to be a space tourist, I cant wait to by my ticket to the moon!

The Moon,s been done, be a bit more adventurous.
