A Conversation for Natural Units

In a recent column in Asimov Magazine Robert Silverberg deduced that
the basic building block of the universe is the Smithereen. He reminded us
that anything can be blown to smithereens but smithereens can not be subdivided.
How would this affect units of measure? Any ideas?
