A Conversation for How to Skin a Cat

There was a letter to the Times recently about this, proposing that the cat o'nine tails is not the origin of the expression "not enough room to swing a cat":

Further, there is some evidence that "letting the cat out of the bag" refers to the whip and not a substitute pig.

I don't think you can give either definition without some caveat.

Hi manolan smiley - biggrin

For each of the expressions I included, I found between 2 and 2 dozen alternate explanations. I *could* have included them all and indeed I included more in one draft, but I felt it just bogged things down and made things confusing.

Given that even scientific *facts* are hotly disputed, the scope for argument over literary roots is immense. That's all part of the fun though and I hope this piece helps to add to that.

Thanks for the observation though smiley - cheers

Ironically, after trying to PUT a cat in a bag, your arms tend to look like they've had a session with the cat-o-nine-tails.

That's my one-time-at-band-camp story for this article... which was good, by the way. I intend to inflict it upon any cat lovers i know.
