...because you can go out in almost any town or city and be in almost any town or city !
They have no personatity and almost are devoid of any redeming features except that of being able to get drunk enough to forget how shudderingly dreadful your surronding are !

I recently went to the Trout Inn at Godstow, near Oxford. This has a reputation as Inspector Morse's favourite pub - well, he must have been spinning in his grave that day! It's in a lovely setting but the bar is about 2 inches long to fit in as many tables as possible - and people were queuing in an orderly fashion!! - , they only serve Bass or Tetley's which is practically no real ale at all, and a quick look at the menu reveals that everything apart from the steak comes ready made and frozen so that all the kitchen staff have to do is microwave it.
Instead of leaving it as a charming country pub with good food and good beer, Bass (the incarnation of the Antichrist IMHO) have turned it into a 'Vintage Inn' with a great emphasis on faux-traditional decor and uniform quality standards instead of character. It was truly depressing.

Sorry for the duplication - my line disconnected while I was typing and somehow posted twice when I reconnected.

That happens a lot, the connection going and duplicate posting. So do theme pubs. Certainly more often than they deserve to.
