This classic piece of literature by Lewis Carol
contains the following:
At this moment the King, who had been for some time busily
writing in his note-book, cackled out 'Silence!' and read out
from his book, 'Rule Forty-two. All Persons More Than A Mile
High To Leave The Court.'
Do you suppose this would turn God out (as he is always reported as being much larger than that)
Alice in wonderland and other literary 42's.

The one that sticks for me is that Gimli the Dwarf slays exactly forty-two Orcs during the defence of Helm's Deep in LOTR. Did Tolkein know about 42?
