A Conversation for Venice, Italy

Great place to get lost

Post 1

Seriously. The best way to experience Venice is to throw away your maps and just start wandering around the back streets. Don't worry - Venice is actually very small, and there are many (occasionally obscure) signs pointing out the direction to familiar landmarks. San Marco in particular is extremely easy to find from just about anywhere.

My favorite thing about Venice is the lack of cars. If you want to get somewhere, you have to walk. If you need to cross the canal where there isn't a bridge, you take a quick vaporetto.

Hear, Hear!

The most enjoyable part of Venice are the little coffee shops and stores away from San Marco. San Marco is beautiful but you get more of an idea of the city by just "going"

Don't be afraid to go into the smaller churches - some are suprisingly beautiful on the inside.

Also try to get up at dawn and go for a walk - it's amazing to see Venice as a working city rather than as a postcard.
