No mention of the Naval Base?

Doesn't the Naval Base still make a large impact on San Diego? Or has the town outgrown it?

Also, I stayed for a few days in SD several years back (not counting the two weeks from my birth in SD to my deportation) and noticed that everyone I heard swore, from adults to children with dogs, even the dogs. Has anyone else noticed this?

The dark stain on the otherwise fair city. The naval base is huge, which the local taverns to become overfilled with beer swilling, tobacco chewing, ten-gallon hat wearing, certified rednecks. The wise hitchhiker will avoid National City at all costs, as well as the pubs in Old Town when there are lots of new ships in port.

Hey, I grew up in National City/Spring Valley! Spent at least 12 years there... Of course, I *left*... smiley - winkeye

I was aiming more at tourist attractions, and which the base is still sort of "ooh, ahh" I wouldn't tell people to go enjoy a day by the ships which may at some point spew out their nuclear fuel stuff. Which in reality would probably never happen, but it's still pretty scary. They can see somewhat smaller boats at the Hyatt's marina without the danger of having thier DNA attacked. Personal? Maybe. But that's what h2g2's about, right? smiley - winkeye

No self-respecting traveller would get too close to the base anyway, since the road it sits on is rather slummy looking.

The Ghost Of TV's Frink

While on vacation, we were looking for Anthony's Fish Grotto, made a wrong turn, and nearly got shot by a couple of itchy trigger finger base guards........

LOL! Poor Frink... smiley - sadface

But we'll just keep that little gem *out* of the limelight, if you don't mind. smiley - winkeye

The question is, which naval base? 32nd street? Naval Training Center? Miramar (Though it's now a marine corps base?) The naval amphibious base? Be specific, man! smiley - smiley

Miramar is closed, and NTC is really just an addition to the big Naval Station. So there's really only one... unless you go counting Coronado.

Want to see what life would be like with curfew? Ever dreamt of experiencing military takeover? Miramar - San Diego's biggest attraction! smiley - winkeye

Though they all have really nice cars...

Just wanted to point out as an ex resident from there, that Miramar is NOT closed, it was just taken over by the Marines!
Instead of being NAS Miramar, it is now MCAS Miramar :O)
At one point when the Navy was going to leave, they did consider that they could make it into an international airport but was met up with overwhelming protest LOL!
I would also like to mention that there is a SPECTACULAR air show held there every year around AUG that as a tourist you should NOT miss!!!!
