A Conversation for The Grape

I'm eating a lot of grapes at the moment, so I thought I'd see what we have to say about them smiley - smiley

And it's mostly excellent until... uh-oh...

'Besides these grapes also contain flavonoids which as well as giving the grape its colour, are believed to reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer's disease. However, grapes also contain tannins (Organic compounds), which contradict the notion that grapes can cure cancer as scientists believe tannins promote the risk of cancer.'

Ok, the first bit is factually correct, but a little pointless. Flavonoids have indeed been shown to have potential in reducing the risk of cancer and heart disease; ironically, though, the body wants to get rid of them and works to break 'em up and flush 'em out. The body needs very little in the way of flavonoids to get this 'protection', anyway - you get more than enough in an average balanced diet - and you can get more from citrus fruits, tea and red wine (which contains more than grapes because the skins remain in contact with the wine). If you really wanted lots of flavonoids, you'd eat something else.

There is nothing concrete, as yet, to link flavonoids with Alzheimer's. There was a trial which studied the effects of two flavonoids, luteolin and diosmin, on a plaque which is symptomatic of the disease. The trial was fairly successful, but was conducted on mice; for some reason, Alheimer's drugs tend to fail at this important stage. This doesn't mean it won't be successful, but we don't know if it's going to be any use at all yet. Oh - and you won't find much of either of those flavonoids in a grape.

'However, grapes also contain tannins (Organic compounds), which contradict the notion that grapes can cure cancer...' notwithstanding all the above, grapes can, at best, help to prevent cancer. That's quite different to a cure.

'...scientists believe tannins promote the risk of cancer.' Again, not much tannin in a grape, unless you squash a load of them, ferment them and leave them to mature in oak barrels. Tannins are still quite useful, though, and they have been studied for anti-cancer properties themselves. In fact, the only 'tannin causes cancer' research I can find is http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0876/is_n56/ai_9164614 , and if you believe that nonsense you probably think Gillian McKeith is great.

Ok. Just remember that most of my work these days isn't done under the Skankyrich account, so I don't use it every day. I often don't even log in to it for a week or so.

When I was involved with the Edited Guide, which I'm not really now, Uni projects weren't awarded retrospectively. I hope that's still the case, because I think there's more to a Uni project than just writing Entries on a theme.
