Just to add to what I've said - the first 4 miles are HARD! especially if you aren't as fit as you should be, but if you keep going you are amply rewarded - for a couple of hours the only unnatural sound I heard was the water sloshing around in my rucksack, and the setting was amazing, I've never experienced anything like it.
Also, don't be disheartened by the fact that you can see Sidmouth when you look back for most of the way. There were a few points where I'd spent what felt like hours climbing one of the hills, and I look over my shoulder and I could still see where I got off the bus!
