Tigers sleep for two main reasons -
1. in zoos/safaris, there is very little else to do.
2. it's evolution. Indian summers are HOT ... one way of cooling down is to lie in the shade, sleeping .. then hunt in the night.

I thought they slept all day in the sun because they were solar powered.
