Au contraire. All music is learnt by ear. These calculations are for answering the questions that arise, such as: why do you have to adjust your D between singing a chord of D minor and one of G major?
Singing by ear is the best introduction to music, as recommended in the first sol-fa entry.

oh relaxed one! I learned sheet music, read the note postion fingers produce note- then later in india hear note repeat note.
Im not really a goer round thisd site. Why is it better than GW? there are certainly some odder names of users here! Is it more jokey? Is is for writing? waht is this space oddity, oh roman fundue eater?

You'll have to tell me where to find GW or what it is, before I can compare it with h2g2.
I stumbled on hootoo (ie here) about 14 months ago and got hooked very quick. It's my club, where I make my rants, read those of my fellow hootooers, and engage in sometimes delightful and sometimes stimulating conversations. I forgot long ago what subject I was searching for when first directed here -- how did you find yourself here?

Ah -- GW is Get Writing. Detective work pays off. Been here over a year and still finding my way about.

Its so bizaree I can feel lost without leaving my chair! (you sould know about that being so characteristically recumbent!)
Yes I write on get writing, lots. I dont rant there thghouas its more formal than here it seems.
I should really practise my indian classical shouldnt I? but it means getting a hramonium and giving up debauchery. Hmm...

Good Question. When I came here here was h2g2 but now h2g2 seems to include3 GW which for me isn't quite the same as here. But all I can call here is . . . h2g2. So where am I?
