A few years ago I was told by someone who was filling in a tourist visa for the US that they ask you if you're going to the USA to perform actsew of terrorism against the White House. I can see that they wouldn't let you in if they thought you were going to, so who's really going to say "yes" to that?

Yes, there is a very comprehensive list of do you/have you evers - including have you ever been found guilty of acts of genocide, or were you involved in the administration of Nazi Germany, and lots lots more!

I'd love to know if anyone's ever said yes to those questions. I know if it was me I'd be a bit scared of saying so.

The reason you get asked those questions is, apparently, as follows:
If you say you haven't entered the country to be a criminal/terrorist/whatever and then you go on to commit an act of terrorism, they've got a legal statement from you that you clearly lied on.
I don't know why this is important, but I have a nasty feeling that it adds to any eventual prison sentence and/or definitely makes your act a Federal Offense. Which means you end up in The Big House, making closer friends than you'd like with your cellmate.
