Great article
I've seen a few things on the Segal method of self build (named after the architect who first used the method as a temporary place to live while his own home was being massively refurbished) where normal DIY materials are used but not cut. In other words if a piece of standard sized marine plywood is 8 feet by 4 feet then the house or structure is designed in multiples of 8 x 4.
The pole design method, I believe, is used to avoid a lot of digging of footings etc and the resulting homes last for as long as any brick built house - so I hear.
