A Conversation for Cross Country Running

Philosophically speaking is cross-country a team sport? Can any individual do anything to influence the placings of their fellow team members? Whether that is to assist them positively, or to hinder opponents?
For want of a cliche, in teams Together Everyone Achieve More i.e. the sum of the parts is greater than the individual components? But if you can't achieve more is it right to call it a team event?
