Playing the Ball

Rugby League

Once the tackle has been completed a player must stand up and play the ball between his legs

Rugby Union

'Ruck': The player does not need to stand up to play the ball. However he must turn to his own side to release the ball. The opposition who are on their feet can attempt to retrieve the ball. If you hold onto it on the ground a penalty is awarded to the opposite team - this is called 'holding on'.
