In my idiolect (linguistic slang for my personal use of the language) pancake and flapjack are very far from being the same thing. For me, flapjacks include oatmeal and are baked in an oven.
The article itself, however, is anything but a pancake. Good distillation

The interesting thing about dialect is that it is different wherever you go. And the words *do* tend to get reused.
