If you want a safe fire in the counrty, you need to dig a fire pit. What you need to do is cut a circleshape in the ground with a spade and carefully remove the turf from inside the circle, preferably in one piece. Roll up the turf and border the circle with rocks. You now have a fire pit which can be used with Due Care and Attention. When you finish with the fire, you can replace the turf and leave the place as you found it, which of course is the main country code rule.

But take care where you light the fire. I seem to remember that fires are not allowed in any of the English national parks.

yeah, good point cornice, national parks are not really the place to practice. Maybe you could try beside a loch in scotland, but i dont know about the laws in england. Is the tresspass law enforced in england? I never could figure that out.
