Why should you change the direction of the lines from one cut to the next? Is it to protect the lawn somehow?

One changes the direction of the stripes to avoid slowly digging ruts in your lawn. Ruts are bad because they catch your blade, and provide wet spots for fungi to grow, and dry brown spots where the ridges are because the water runs away.

Are stripes considered esthetically pleasing in the UK?
