Word of the Week

0 Conversations

In the dim dark recesses of h2g2 history before we moved lock,
stock and barrel to our new BBC home there used to be a front page feature
The h2g2 Word of the Day. It was a way to
highlight some of the lesser occurring or largely obscurer words in the
English language. Sadly this feature was

discontinued.

Until now...

Word for the Week

This week's word was suggested by Yelbakk on 9
Jan 2001.

Its a word that may be handy if you were to know exactly when the world was about to end and wanted to talk about the countdown to it. However in everyday use it is more commonly found in reference to lists etc.

antepenultimate

n. two before the end (ie the one before the
penutimte).

From the Archive

This week in our look at the word for the day archive I've chosen a word which every researcher is in their own small way adding to here at the guide.

Epistemology
n. The theory of knowledge, especially with regard to its methods,
validity and scope.

It was originally suggested by Dan on 5 Oct
1999. Dan is currently in his own words 'on one of those lunch breaks that seem to go on forever!' however he said this when he last surfaced on 21 Mar 2001. Must be almost on to the dessert by now we reckon.

The word crops up in the edited entry How to be a Philosopher. However it is covered in more detail in the unedited entry What is Philosophy?.

Also encouragingly this word does crop up quite a lot in conversation
forums. So either Word for the Day was being read or there are a great many sages on h2g2.

How can you contribute?

  1. Go and check out words in the archive to
    avoid duplication.
  2. Check out the discussion threads and nominate a word that you feel was
    overlooked before discontinuation.
  3. Suggest a new word or your forgotten word in the word of the week archive
    conversation.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
