We at (blah) feel that we should point out 'loud music' does not include that of live bands. This quote sums it up better than we can, and outlines some good etiquette.
"As a band, the louder you are the better you sound. I have discussed this with other musicians and we are agreed. You should never ever use a 30 watt amplifier when a 50 watt one will do, and if you have access to a 100 watt amp that is always better than a 50 watt one. For technical reasons 100 watts are not twice as good as 50, just 3 decibels! Don't approach the band in the break. They need to discuss this fascinating information. This advice does not apply if you are a woman. These are facts. Moreover. every musician has a duty to be louder than the others and in particular louder than the drummer. Bass players are the exception to this rule as they don't matter anyway.
I have played with guitarists who have volume controls on both guitar and amp that will only turn up and under no circumstances can they ever be turned down. Every guitarist knows this, it is all down to the one way ratchet system fitted to all good guitars and amps.
It is very rude to talk in a pub when a band is playing. It is partly because of all the other rude people in the pub that the band have to be turned up loud so that you can hear them properly. They have rehearsed very hard to achieve the standard that you deserve to hear. Please be properly grateful that you are being treated to 'can't get enough', 'Day Tripper', 'you really got me' or 'Smoke on the Water'."
Thankyou for reading. Carry on!
