Fiddling with Footnotes

0 Conversations

This is an experiment to see if mutiple instances of a footnotable word/phrase/whatever can be linked to the same footnote

There is a Feature-Suggestions conversation about this here

What I have done on this page does work, although its not exactly elegant. But, until something better is implemented, it can be regarded (by me at least) as a work-around, not that I actually need one, but who cares?

I was thinking about using a gif or similar (from the PictureLibrary) as a link (instead of an asterisk), so that its ALT attribute could be used to display the definition associated with the footnotable word, but I haven't tried that yet - who knows, maybe one day I will?

This paragraph has two ordinary footnotes in it

The quick brown fox 1 jumps over the lazy dog.
Now is the time for all good men 2to come to the aid of the party.

This is the paragraph about the golden rule

Remember the golden rule,
3
whoever has the gold makes the rules.

This is the paragraph about duplicity

The next sentence has the word RULE in it, which has has already been footnoted. This is the 2nd time it's been used, further down the page it has been used again. Clicking on the asterisk after it should link to the relevant footnote, which contains a link back to here. Here comes the word again, here it is... rule
*
and, as stated just before, the asterisk should be a link to the ordinary RULE footnote

This is the paragraph about triplicity

It has a sentence with another instance if the word RULE in it, this is the third time so far. Once again, clicking on the asterisk after it should link to the relevant footnote, which contains a link back to here

Here comes the word again, here it is... rule
*
and, as stated just before, the asterisk should be a link to the ordinary RULE footnote and that has a link back to the start of this paragraph

And here's just one more paragraph with a footnote, just to test4 how well you're paying attention

1FOX: if you don't know, I ain't telling2MEN: I think that when this phrase was 1st coined, men meant adult males AND females, although I might be wrong3
A rule is something that was designed to be broken
It is mentioned in the paragraph about the golden rule, the paragraph about
duplicty
and also the paragraph about
triplicity
although I have a hunch there isn't such a word
4Test: something that is done to see if everything works as planned
