A Conversation for Blood, Bandages and Barber Poles - the History of Barbers

Not in Hungary and I don't know about other places

A few years ago I was asked to address a group of Hungarians in Budapest. I intended to support my talk with a strip cartoon which centred on a group of barbers.
When I showed my interpreter the first picture with a barbers pole he said, "What's that?" When I insisted that he must surely know this sign and it would be one visual clue that would not need translation he assured me that there were no barbers in Hungary that used this sign.
I was surprised but further conversations with other people convinced me that this was so.
