Befnal Green - Columbia Road

Post 1

People might be interested to know that there is a flower market in Columbia Rd early on Sundays, that's worth a visit. There are also several "unreconstructed" pubs and one or two nice cafes on the street. The most notable thing about Columbia Road is that, in part, it is in exactly the same condition it was in 100 years ago (some of it was obviously bombed to bits in the forties and replaced by drab concil blocks). In fact if you nip into the Royal Oak pub for example, you will find that it still retains a great deal of it's 1930s bar furniture, and also that at this end of the street there are also a few cobbled alleyways that at night are incredibly spooky, and not surprisingly have frequently appeared on tv and film shrouded in fog with buxom victorian beauties screaming their lungs out for good measure. These tiny little cobbled streets really must be seen to be believed, and in fact there are several old gas lamps still in place lighting the way (although now converted to electricity of course!)
Well worth a visit (and the pubs are open early on Sunday mornings for the flower sellers so no excuse not to go really!)
Cheers
Sulk
