The Faerie Glen, Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK
Created | Updated May 12, 2004
The Faerie Glen, off the west coast of Scotland, UK, is an area of very strange appearance, situated close to Uig, a village far to the north on the Isle of Skye. It is a quiet place, except for bleating sheep, and is often described as otherworldly and relaxing. It is wild and far out, covered with many strangely-shaped little hills. It is a pleasant natural spot with more than a hint of mystery.
The area of Faerie Glen is more than 15,000 square metres1, made up of small, conical-shaped hillocks rising 2 - 10 metres in height, overgrown with thick, green turfy grass, littered with bleating sheep, sheep droppings, and strange yellow mushrooms of unknown power and use. There is a little brook running through it, and there is a small circle of stones, shaped like a spiral. According to legend, girls who dance naked on the spiral will have their dearest wishes2 fulfilled...
To get to the Faerie Glen, you will have to turn to the right from the main road from Portree, just before you enter Uig. Follow the road, which actually passes through the Faerie Glen, up into the hills and you can't miss it.
A very important thing to take with you (along with food, drink, and stuff like that) is a raincoat. This is the west coast of Scotland, after all, and faeries or no, it is not an area famous for its sunshine. It's much better known for its rainy weather.
