I am surprised to see you say Charles I was not a great sponsor; he was more than a great sponsor, he was an utter music head. Some historians cite his regular excesses, in sponsoring lavish masques, as grounds equal to his alleged treason for the Puritans to set about deposing him. The amounts he spent were phenomenal, and broke his budget every year.
When his favourite musician, William Lawes, was killed in battle, the king held a deeper mourning for him than he did for his own cousin Lord Bernard Stuart, killed in the same action.
