This entry covers the technique for cleaning a CD, which even the instructions that come with the CD polish don't do.

Music, PC and console¹ CDs benefit from a cleaning. If you're a techno-chappie/lass then you'll be surprised at how much use you can get out of your polish, a small tube of which will last ages.

CDs get dirty from careless (or even careful) handling, accidents and thoughtless friends. The CD will stick, producing music that just isn't right, or games that won't run.

First time CD-cleaners, especially younger ones, may feel a bit apprehensive when they give a £16 CD its first polish but the technique is something you will pick up very quickly.

Polishing

1. Place the CD upside-down on a flat surface.

2. Apply a drop of polish about the size of a small pea near the centre of the CD. Obviously it is impossible to get it dead centre because of the hole. Near enough to that spot will be fine.

3. Get the brush, and apply firm, straight strokes. Not circular ones.

Make the strokes firm, as this is how you'll clean off all the fluff and not have any polish left on the CD.
