e128, otherwise known as Red 2G, is a dye added to e.g. sausages and burgers to make them look fresher, and to give the impression of a higher meat content.According to industry experts, the dye might also be found in cheap varieties of jams and preserves.
However, the European Food Safety Authority has said (July, 2007) that it's no longer considered safe to eat prtoducts containing this dye as it's been shown to increase the risk of cancer in rats and mice.
Scientists at EFSA say that the dye is converted in the body into aniline (aminobenzene), and based on similar metabolism of aniline in animals and humans, a carcinogenic risk foir humans cannot be excluded.
