Actually, St. Patrick driving the snakes from Ireland is a metaphor for driving the druids out. Sorry, I don't have any references handy, if anybody else knows what I'm talking about, please collaborate.

Apparently the word "Patrick" is similar to an old Norse/Viking word which means "Snake Banisher", and this is where the legend comes from. When the Vikings arrived in Ireland they heard a lot about this guy Patrick, and mistakenly assumed he had something to do with reptilian pest control....
