Reefgirl (Brunel Baby)

I'll never understand my daughter's listening habits, she'll go from condeming anything recorded before the year 2000 as ancient to
"Mum can I borrow your Queen CD"
"Mum can you make me a copy of your Queen CD"
"Mum can I borrow your Beatles CD"
"Mum can you put David Bowie on my iPod"

She's watching the Freddie Mercury Concert at the moment

I'll never understand kids

Well I can't argue with your taste in music!! Don't discourage her. It's the new stuff that's rubbish.

Sho - employed again!

I made myself a promise that I'd never say "no you're not listening to that, it's rubbish" when I had the Gruesomes.

It's been hard but they respond well to me saying: "why is Tokio Hotel better than Take That"? Or "how come you love Kate Nash but hate Lily Allen"

The sounds most likely to be coming out of their room right now are High School Bleedin' Musical 2 - however, yesterday when I sent them up to tidy them, they took one of my classical compilations and had that blasting out. Today they were bored and made me put Pink Floyd and Deep Purple on their mp3 players. They'll now say things like: "oh Amanda Marshall is better than Melissa Etheridge because it's not all samey"

My maternal heart bursts with pride, and I overlook their Rhianna obsession.

Reefgirl - your daughter sounds fine to me!

If I ever have kids they'll be locked in a room and only be allowed to listen to good music smiley - smiley

That would depend on what you call good...

My mum got me into Frank Zappa, The Enid, Classical, Jon & Vangelis, Tomita... as well as me getting her into Genesis, Crowded House and some other stuff. Nice when it works both ways.

Well think you'd be hard pushed to show me something worse than Radiohead or dance/trance/club music. smiley - groan

Alex likes High School Musical too, she didn't have a lot of choice with Queen tho, all of us in the family are fans, she's still heavily into Steps tho and Grease but that's because they did it at school

Ah well good would include such bands as Deep Purple, The Who, The Stones, Queen, Adam and The Ants, Talking heads and Nightwish.

Oh Adam & The Ants! I'll have to dig out my Kings of the Wild Frontier LP and show the Gruesomes what real music is all about smiley - magic

Alex usually wets herself laughing whenever she sees 80's pop stars on TV, it's the hair, the make up and the clothes and that's just the men

She does like Axl Rose singing We Will Rock You and (she will deny this) she has been known to sing along with Status Quo in the car

We taught the Gruesomes how to do the Status Quo dance - it's hilarous if they ever hear them, off they go, hair flying smiley - laugh

I introduced them to Japan - I used to be in lurve with David Sylvian. "Bor, mum, he wears too much make up" I didn't dare show them Steve Strange after that!

Alex likes to see pictures of David Bowie in his Ziggy Stardust days, she's not too sure about Boy George tho

Strange, isn't it? It's the same with the Gruesomes. Probably because they love Bowie's music much more than Culture Club.

Understanding Kids

Post 14

NPY

Well Culture Club is typical 80s stuff. Weird hair, hats and make-up.....David Bowie seems to transcend the decades and fiot in anywhere.

And then there is The Laughing Gnome...

I was listening to Ziggy Stardust over the weekend, on my old, thick, scratchy vinyl - and on boy, how depressing is Five Years? Made me want to listen to Leonard Cohen for light relief smiley - laugh

Like Leonard Cohen.

Nothing's as depressing as Radiohead though.

You can call me TC

I'm worried that my kids' musical taste is so identical to mine. When they were still living at home it was a great way to get to gigs that I possibly wouldn't otherwise have got to see. I didn't just drive them there, I joined in the fun.

Actually, it's almost the same now. Except they drive.

I hope I can do that with mine, TC.

What's wrong with Radiohead...

Understanding Kids

Post 19

NPY

What's *wrong* with Radiohead? The question ahould be "what's right with them?" They're *so* depressing, moaning into the microphones and making weird noises. It's not even tunefull.
