There are as many different training methods as there are trainers and dogs (or there should be), what sort of training have you done in dog behaviour?

Mainly, many books and dvd's and personal experience. As in most things throughout my long life, I am self taught. I do not follow any one method but try to encompass many as possible, always looking to learn more and do what ever is best for dog and owner alike.

I find too many so called experts pushing there beliefs and putting down those who do not agree with their dogmatic views. (Excuse the pun)

I found the same when studying human psychology !

I spent two years self study of dog behaviour methods before adopting a dog of my own. 10 weeks ago I rescued a breeding dog who new nothing about the outside world and broken canine teeth from as the vet put it trying to get out or a breeding pen or cage.

she was very fearful of everything, shaking like a leaf at every sound and movement. fearful of humans, dogs and parked vehicles to name a few problems. An outside dog that did not know how to behave in a home environment.

I will not go into details as it would take too long but she is now well adjusted and goes out with me to help other dogs and owners. She adopts young dogs and goes in to mother mode, correcting over excited behaviour until they calm down.

No training, she does it automatically and is my greatest asset. She has full trust in me to protect her and I love her to bits.

I found your articles interesting and helpful, it is a shame you are no longer on site but can guess why you may not want to stay around. I too have had the wrath of the so called Gods but put it down to a lack of experience and self importance and and almost phobic fear of trolls.

Thanks for answering my post and wish you all the best for Xmas and New Year.

You can't learn dog training from books and DVDs, or through your own dogs. You need to have proper training, from other trainers, get out there and assist at classes, get more experiences with real live dogs that don't live with you and that you've been around more than 10 weeks. smiley - erm

If you study alone you have no idea of what the long term effects of what you are doing will be.

You are right, a lot of people put down other trainers that use methods they don't agree with. I, for instance, dislike the method you have chosen, but I don't deny there is a market for it, and it must work for enough people otherwise it wouldn't keep going. But there is need for training among others, joining an organisation that will assess you, continue your ongoing training and development (seminars, conferences etc) and having regular contact with other trainers to discuss ideas and learning other methods - even ones you wouldn't want to use.
