Who is George Ruthven?

Lonnytunes - Winter Is Here

We have arrived at the same place. My brother recieved the following a few months ago.

Thank you for telling me about your Ruthven ancestry. I often wondered about GTJR first family. With the two women in his life both being called Mary Ann I had not realised that my 3x great grandmother was not Mary Ann Tamplin when I first started researching. I'd wondered why George John William was born in 1816 and then I had not been able to find any more births for George TJ & Mary Ann until 1828. It was a book called "Triumphs of Detection" by George Dilnot. Published in 1929 by Geoffrey Bles, Houghton Mifflin Company. London, Boston and New York, which talks about George's career and his wife. How she was beautiful and ran away with James Heseltine (Shock Jem). George was out for revenge. It would appear he never married the next Mary Ann (Harrison) in his life. In his will he refers to Mary Ann H also known as Mary Ann Ruthven. Presumably because he was not divorced from Mary Ann Tamplin.

Two other books with some information in are:-
"The History of the Bow Street Runners" by Gilbert Armitage Pub by Wishart 1912
"Chronicles of Bow Street Police Office" by P Fitzgerald Pub Chapman & Hall 1888

I was able to request them at the local library and they found them in various libraries around the UK.

I have various copies of documents I've collected including:-
George Thomas Josephs Will
Extraction of details of GTJ & Mary Ann Tamplins marriage.
George John Williams entry in christening register.
Application to Vicar Generals Office for GJW's marriages to Louisa Wakefield & Sophia Jones.
Mary Ann Ruthven (Widow) to Thomas Wilson.

I'm happy to copy them for you and send. I could try scanning them or send them by snail mail.

I don't have anything else on Mary Ann T or Henry E. So far I have not come across him again in various census, registers etc, rather like GWR. I had not realised he'd emigrated. I don't know on which ship he left the UK. Have you tried any web sites I understand that are devoted to transcribing ships.

http://members.tripod.com/surnames 8,000 links UK was one I used to look at from time to time. I seem to remember they had a link to ships for Australia.

The picture I've attached was sent to me by a lady who turned out to be my second cousin, our grandfathers being brothers. She received a copy from someone who said it's original hangs in a house some where in the Home Counties and it is thought to be a portrait of GTJR out side Bow Street Police Office.

I'd love to have more detail of your part of the family if you have it to add to the tree. Do you know where GTJ came from? I have not been able to find if he were a London man or may be even have come to London from Scotland. All I've come into contact who are descended from him seem to be stuck at this point.

My line:-
GTJ & Mary Ann H (3x greatgrand parents)
Christopher Charles Robert R & Jemima Rieg (2x gg)
Christopher John R & Harriet Eliza Elliott (gg)
Albert William Ruthven & Mary Elsie Ritter (grandparents)
Sidney Percival R & Elsie May Birks (parents)
Christina Helen R (me) otherwise known as Tina

The family tree maker programme I use tells me we are half 4th cousins once removed.

Tina

Well, crud.
I'll keep him in the back of my mind and if I see anything in an out of the way place, I'll mention it.

Hi Tina - I'm researching George Thomas Joseph Ruthuen (post Cato) with regard to other cases he worked on during the 1820's until the force was disbanded in 1839. This will form the core of a mystery murder case which is my area of writing.
Earlier in this thread you mentioned that you had "various copies of documents including:-
George Thomas Josephs Will
Extraction of details of GTJ & Mary Ann Tamplins marriage.
George John Williams entry in christening register.
Application to Vicar Generals Office for GJW's marriages to Louisa Wakefield & Sophia Jones.
Mary Ann Ruthven (Widow) to Thomas Wilson."
Is it at all possible for me to get copies of these?
I'd love to get as much detail about the man as possible - a lot has already been put together by David Cox in his 2010 book A certain Share of Low Cunning: A History of the Bow Street Runners 1792-1839 - but mine is going to be more centered on the man and his post Cato Street work.
Hope to hear from you
Best wishes
Dave
