Hello there smiley - smiley Woohoo! another smiley - artist

I started with acrylics and have started using oils and watercolours in the last few months. I love oils smiley - biggrin

It's mostly landscapes: some for real and some out of my head. Mind you, I've had a bash at portraiture and found that I enjoy that a lot. Also some very off the wall free painting which is a joy when I get the urge smiley - magic I've found myself doing bigger and bigger canvases, which is becoming a challenge for where to hang them smiley - laugh

Have you been painting for long? I only gave it a go in January 07 and discovered that once I let myself go there were decades of inspiration ready to pour out onto the canvas. It's a complete delight to me.

Mind you, the last three months I've barely done anything, thanks to the move to NZ and living in a furnished shoebox apartment: not conducive to relaxing in front of an easel. I'm moving into a house in a couple of weeks and hope that over Xmas I'll find the muse again smiley - smiley

Tell me about your art. Do you have any photos? Is there a hootoo art club? smiley - erm Perhaps there should be?

I work with oils and with alkyds, which are a fast drying oil. I've done landscapes, portraits, still lifes, and abstracts. I'll come back soon with some links for you -- I too sleepy tonight to even post properly. Great to meet another artist on hootoo, and congratulations on your recent move.

Hello JEllen smiley - smiley

I'm sorry I've been such a lax poster. Xmas and settling into my new house rather took over the last week. However, I'm now feeling relaxed and calm smiley - zen and I may even find the right frame of mind to paint over the next few days smiley - somersault

I have set up the wee back bedroom as an artroom. It has a wonderful big window overlooking the lawn and the trees at the edge of the garden. Small, but perfect.

I like your paintings smiley - ok It looks as though you've been painting for years; is that right? My stuff is very naive in comparison, largely due to the fact that I only discovered it two years ago - and even now I find time is a huge problem, so I don't get the brushes out as much as I'd like. (smiley - bleep w*rk really messes up my life smiley - winkeye)

If you let me have your email I'll send you an invite to the album of my stuff on Photobox.

My brother gave me a pastel set for Xmas... a medium I've not used at all so far. I only just started using oils before I left Oz and I've done no painting since then, except a couple of watercolours. So much to experiment with and so little time smiley - yikes I want to carry on with oils for the time being. I love the flexibility that you get from the slow drying, compared with acrylics.

Anyway... enough rambling smiley - smiley

Hope you had a good Xmas and all the best for 2009.

No worries about the delay in posting -- I've been a bit busy myself, what with the holidays and all.

How nice that you are getting settled in a new home, and that you have an art room, that's excellent.

I love oils too -- they are so creamy and rich. Hahaha, I sound like I am talking about ice cream! smiley - laugh I've been painting since I was a junior in college, that would be about 1987. (I had art classes in high school, of course, but they didn't let us paint with oils.) There's an interesting story behind how I started using oil paints -- I found a complete slightly used set in a box of discarded stuff. Somebody was actually throwing away perfectly good paints! I snapped them up, and the rest is history!

Some of my paintings are freehand, but many I trace off using carbon paper. It helps a lot to have an outline to go by. Especially when it comes to portraits.

My New Year's Resolution is to paint more this coming year! Oh yes, and you can reach me at my screenname, at gmail.com. I would indeed like to see some of your work.

Well if only to add to the posts I will say Hi, and so that you think I’m not wasting your time, I have in the past taken pen and paper and actually drawn something.smiley - ok

Being a little more serious I prefer pencil and have dabbled in water colours, miserably for the later.

Nope, I didn't get it! Did you put a dot com at the end of gmail? And it's the first part of my screenname, not the tag line part. Hope that makes sense, and I will check my spam filter too.

Hello, its ok, I came across this tread late last night when all seemed quite. Although I do not actively paint now I still have the pens and paper somewhere in the attic. As mediums go I draw with words now (poems) although I would not also call myself a poet. I been known to take a “mean” photo and have done a few weddings.smiley - bubbly

Hi Winternights, I didn't mean to ignore you, I was just tired last time I posted and forgot. So, a big hello!

Frenchbean, your work is wonderful! I really like it a lot, thanks for sending the link. My favorite one is Ferns 2007. That makes me want to get out and do more landscapes.

smiley - blush I'm so glad you like it JEllen smiley - smiley

Goodness... Ferns 2007 is under the bed smiley - laugh I kind of had enough of looking at it, so it's wrapped with a few of the others, while I have a break from it. How funny...

I'm starting some large landscapes in a couple of days. I prepped the canvases yesterday evening and will sketch out the colour blocking tomorrow before launching forth when I have free headspace on Saturday. I love those first few hours with a canvas: when the unknown starts to become known smiley - magic
