Sho - employed again!

... get a Mac to replace my creaking and aged PC.

I saw your post on Clive's thread about his mouse and thought I'd wander over and say Hi.

"hi"

Er... that's it!

Hi Sho

What...me!! Convince anybody about anything?? smiley - rofl No, far too humble I am (and like Yoda sounding I am!?)smiley - silly.

But seriously, did you follow the links I posted in that convo? The Switch pages on Apples site have useful info on them.

Another good idea if you can is to visit somewhere that sells Macs. John Lewis or Selfridges and the Apple Stores in London and Birmingham (assuming you are in the UK) and having a look and a play with the various different ones available. Don't go to PC World though. They are clueless about Macs. I know more than they do!

In terms of usability the Mac is light years ahead of the PC/Windoze machines IMHO of course. The change over from PC can seem daunting because there are some striking differences but Apple have been writing Graphical User Interface (GUI) software for longer and have always done it better (again IMHO). It is called the Finder and is really intuitive to use. The early versions of Windoze were a programme that had to be run from the DOS command prompt and was released to try and compete with Apples new Finder at the time. The new OS X is based on a bomb proof UNIX core which the user never sees unless they intend to by using a piece of software called Terminal which accesses the UNIX command line. (You really don't need to know this. Terminal is for smiley - geek's and people who like to live dangerously.)

In terms of looks the Mac - in fact any Mac is prettier to look at and takes up less space. Compatability is not a problem either, despite what the Windoze crew say. If you are used to M$ Office or M$ Works then there is a version for the Mac which is actually a better product. (I think the Mac programmers at Micro$oft compete with their colleagues in the Windoze dept.) Apple also produce some cracking software that is cross-compatable with PC software (iWork). Each Mac also comes with iLife and lots of new toys in OS X Tiger (10.4) - the latest OS. Go over to the Orchard and take a look at the convos. We are a helpful bunchsmiley - ok. A690653

I could go on and on - absence of Mac viruses, versatility etc, etc.

So - Hi back smiley - biggrin

Sho - employed again!

I work with a mac-mad girly, and was seriously considering a macMini, for me so I could give the PC to the Gruesomes, but decided on an iMac. Yep, I have decided, now all I have to do is sell the car so I can afford it.

Unfortunately I'm not in UK, but I will deffo have a run round and try out a few macs before I buy. (plenty of time, it's going to take a while to save for this baby)

I used to work for a company which organised a conference on Multimedia and CD-Rom way back in the early 90s. We actually got Bill Gates up on the stage to keynote with John Scully (the then CEO of Apple) and actually they were a great double act.

I've always loved the look of the MAC interface, and the raving that my colleague at work does has been enough now to tip me over the edge. (the Word & Excel compatibility have finally finally convinced me) Now if only I could afford the 20" version...

Yay!smiley - ok

I lust for a new Mac and have seriously considered the MacMini. The one I've got is an old G3 (the new ones are G5!) Not the earliest version but one of the 5-flavour iMacs (blueberry). It was the first to have a combined CD/DVD drive. Still going strong though.

Here is a start to your savings smiley - 2cents.

Sho - employed again!

I loved the multi coloured ones, but I liked the little dome things with the monitor on a stick, much much nicer than the new ones.

Still... I am very excited, so thanks for the smiley - 2cents - every little helps!

I'm now wondering how a mouse works with only one button.

Thanks, and thanks for the tips about refurbished macs. I ended up talking with a very helpful woman at the apple call centre (so much better than they used to be), which made it easier too.

smiley - cheers
