Lord Hasting's execution

Well firstly I gotta say what an impressive piece your Yorkist's At Peace article is however, and it is only a minor error, you put Lord Hasting's death on Friday 13th June 1483, which unfortunately is not correct, the actual date of his death was Friday 20th June 1483. I'll quote from Christine Carpenter's update of Kingsford's The Stonor Letters and Papers 1290 - 1483, p416: Sir Clements Markham has argued that "As Saturday was the 21st, Friday last was the 20th. We have evidence that Lord Hastings was not beheaded until a week after his arrest... The story of Morton about the hurried execution on the 13th, and the log of wood, is therefore false". Dr. Gairdner contested this conclusion. But the fact that the letter ( A letter fir Simon Stallworth, a servant of the Duke of Gloucester, to Sir William Stonor) was written in two hands affords an esay explanation; the first part may well have been written on the Friday, the 20th, and the end added by Stallworth on the Saturday.

Hope this helps

Faithfully

Interesting, I really hadn't heard of that letter. I wonder if Hastings received a trial in the meantime (highly unlikely I'd have thought, as the the other three did not).

But thanks for telling mesmiley - smiley.

I think you're right about him not receiving a trial because as you say the other 3 did not and it would simply delay the matter even further and even draw attention to the fact that the charges were no doubt a shambles. On another note though I see you're studying for an MA? I'm looking at doing Law at one of the law colleges dotted around the country mainly because I'm not overly sure what use a History degree is, other than in the public sector (civil service, military etc) that is. Any suggestions as to what else I can do with my degree?

And Introducing... A Leg

Well, I intend to move on to PhD, then lecture and write on the subject, because that's what I've always wanted to do even though I wasted a few years after my BA in dead-end jobs because I'd listened to unhelpful people telling me it wasn't a good idea. Now I'm determined to make it work.

That said, I've been studying paleography and manuscript as part of my course, so archivism is well worth a look. Of course, I'm very lucky here to have the Canterbury Cathedral archives at my disposal.

Not that you must do this as well, you understand. But if it's what you want to do, my advice is do it. If law is what you want to do, do that. If people tell you that there can't be many jobs in the field, ignore them, like I should have done.
