Hi,
Thanks! I get so little mail, down there in my personal space, that I didn't see it for 20 hours.
I'll go on over to the club.
Awu.
P.S. Not much cycling happening here. (-30C with the windchill, and at least 60 CM of snow.) I have to be happy with my home trainer.

The snow is a problem for sure. Do you ski?

Yes - I ski, X-country, when ever I can. I can ski right from my doorstep into a few square miles of Conservation Area land. I haven't done much down hill since I came to Canada, although there are some little ski areas even in Ontario. I was spoiled in Germany, with the Alpes so close (but the traffic jams coming back into Munich on a Sunday night were no fun.)
Do you have any experience with home trainers? Rollers, eddy current, the new computerised "race your friends over a phone line" kind, etc?
Mine is just the kind that lifts only the rear wheel.
Awu.

None, I'm afraid - I either ride the bike or use treadmills and cross-trainers. Stationery cycling has never attracted me, and the weather here is not bad enough to keep me off the roads.

Hi,
I finally bought a "new" bike. It's a Specialized Allez Comp 2000. Full Ultegra, Mavic CXP rims. Haven't ridden it yet (except a short test ride before I decided to buy).
My 15K Time Trial times were around 28 mins last season. I've ridden twice this year on the old bike. The first time was terrible - 30:56. It was very windy, but the course is out and back so it should balance out (never does completely). Then, still on the old bike of course, I turned in 27:10 - a P.B. Don't know what happened, except that I really concentrated on pedal technique.
So tonight, weather permitting, I'll see what a difference the new bike makes.
The previous owner kept the computer, so I'll be without speed or cadence. The shifters are Flight Deck compatible, so I might just get the computer that deduces cadence from road spead and current gear.
Awu.
P.S. The club arranged for us to ride on a 1/4 mile car racing track a few weeks a ago. That was fun. Scratch races, team pursuits, Olympic pursuits.

I rode from St Albans to Reading yesterday on my touring bike - 40 miles, 2h 3min. Not bad, for an old bloke

Wow - nearly 20 mph for two hours is impressive.
I cut about 30S of the TT time with the new bike - and I still have some setting up to do.
And the forks are steeper and therefore "twitchier" ( a small movement being a sharp turn) so I'm not comfortable down on the aero bars yet.
Awu.
P.S. On CBC Radio, in a program called As It Happens, whenever there's a piece about the U.K, they finish up by saying how far it is from Reading (car lengths, lawyers laid end to end, hours' flying time for a parrot - whatever the story happened to be about). No one remembers how it got started.
