Subbing Orcs

Hello

Just letting you know that I'm subediting your Orcs entry, the new version is over here: A87871701 Orcs.
It's only the second entry I've subbed, you know.

You've a few instances of 'Orc' in uppercase mid-sentence, although the majority is lowercase – considering how Tolkien always capitalised 'Elf' and 'Dwarf', should 'Orc' also be uppercase or lowercase instead?

I haven't got the books to hand (here in work) so I'll have a look when I get home this evening.

I've not made many changes. I capitalised a few 'dwarves' and added links and an accent to a 'Thror'.

The biggest change was with sentence 'They threaten violence in a way calculated to disgust the listener.' I know what you meant, but it felt 'the listener', was almost as if you're promoting the old 1980s BBC radio series. As orcs threaten violence through violent, physical acts such as shoving and it isn't limited to name calling and verbal threats, I didn't think 'the listener' was needed.

So have a read through, let me know what you think and get back to me about the Orc or orc.smiley - ok

Thanks BB. I didn't get a chance to check on orcs vs Orcs.

I'll have a read through what you've done.

I've checked The Lord of the Rings. Although Tolkien capitalises the word orc in the appendices, he doesn't in the main text. So I'm happy to leave orcs in lowercase throughout this entry.

Okay, I changed the three stray 'Orcs' so they are all lowercase. Would you like to read through and give your final thoughts and/or approval?

Looks good, Bluebottle.

Thanks.

We really need someone to update that "Wheel of Time" entry. It only goes up to book 10 of the series.

I'll take that as the thumbs upsmiley - ok

Ah yes - it lists 10 after saying there are nine... How many are they? I'd be careful about saying things like 'We really need someone to...' as people have a habit of assuming you're volunteering.

Gnomon - time to move on

There are 14 books in the series and it is now finished. The author announced after he wrote book 11 that he was dying. He had maybe two or three years left, but he was determined to finish the series at book 12.

He said that he would write book 12 in such a way that someone else could finish it if he died. Only 6 months later he passed away. When it was given to another author to finish, he announced that there was actually about 3 volumes worth of material in it, so they published books 12, 13 and 14.

I've still only read the first 9 books.
